How many publications do you read every day? How many of those do you read and think, "damn, I wish I could write/draw/shoot photos/contribute for them!"
Or you think, "wow, they need me. Their copy is terribly edited and I could make sure it looks swell."
Or you think, "what the hell? I have to be a member of this super-secret, exclusive club just to post a comment? And I have to pay money to be a member? Say whaaaat?"
Yeah. Evergreen thinks that's BS too.
That's why, in 1971, the Cooper Point Journal was created-- not the newspaper, but the student group that creates it.
The Cooper Point Journal (CPJ) student organization has two primary purposes:
1. It exists to ensure the continued existence of the student newspaper, also named Cooper Point Journal, which serves as a medium for informing and entertaining students as well as a forum for the ideas and opinions of students.
2. It exists to provide a learning laboratory for students to learn about effective, responsible expression and communication as well as dealing with such life challenges as maintaining an inclusive organization, establishing a culture of group decision making, personal and collective accountability, and leadership that focuses on fulfilling organization goals and objectives by fostering an environment of consensus and cooperation. (adapted from Operations and Ethics, chapter 1, section A)
For over thirty years, the CPJ has understood and recognized that every student has a voice. Some don't use it, some use it but aren't heard, and some are heard but need another outlet.
The Cooper Point Journal serves the purpose of being that outlet.
As a student at Evergreen, you can write for the CPJ. You can draw. You can shoot photos. You can comment on others' contributions. You can make suggestions for the design and function of the publication. You can learn behind the scenes, editing or helping us with our (new!) website.
This is YOUR publication.
Stop by our office: CAB 332, call 360.867.6213 or email cpj@evergreen.edu to find out more about contributing to the CPJ.
