As the final hours of rehearsal fade away, the cast of this year's production of The Vagina Monologues continues to put the final touches on their performance. Last night after dress rehearsal, directors Cari Pendergrass & Sam Cori discussed last minute tweaks with the talented cast. They discussed, among other things, vocal projection and the possibility of lobbing projectiles into the audience at a key moment in the play. Glitter? Too messy. Dental dams? Perhaps, but there runs the risk of hitting someone in the eye. Bubbles were suggested as a safe yet fun alternative, but we won't know until Friday whether anything will be thrown at all. What I saw of the rehearsal was, in a word, fierce. In a few more words, it was emotionally intense to an impressive degree. The cast led me through a roller coaster of giggles and tears, and at the end I was left with plenty to think about. I anticipate this being one of the theatrical performances that is talked about for a long while.
Eve Ensler's iconic play opens for one weekend only. It will be showing in Lecture Hall 1 at 7:00 pm on this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. $7 for students, $10 for general admission.
