Today, Wednesday, January 18, the snow on the ground is much deeper than expected. About a week ago, the forecast warned us against an inch or two. As this winter weather continues, though, that forecast proves to be more and more incorrect.

On November 28th, the hallway outside the House Ways and Means committee’s special session began to fill up with demonstrators. Within minutes, hundreds of protestors had left the steps of the capitol building and flooded into the narrow hall chanting, “Let us in!” and pounding on the door. Within a few more minutes, the already packed legislative room was filled past capacity with people. From the crowd, someone shouted, “Mic check!” and the speeches began.

Evergreen Trail Map w/ New Mountain Bike Trail

In the northern portion of the Evergreen woods, on a distant arm of the beach trail that begins at the F parking lot, greener mountain bike enthusiasts are constructing an elaborate mountain bike trail. On a steep downhill slope between the trail and the shore, student volunteers are clearing a path and carving features in the otherwise dense woodland. For thrill seekers, the trail will include several large jumps built out of natural materials. While many informal mountain bike trails already exist in the woods, this will be the most sophisticated.

As disagreements over the college’s involvement with corporations like Caterpillar and Aramark continue, there is relatively little to be heard about the proposal being drawn up, inviting cell phone companies and tower providers to bid for a spot on the top of the Clock Tower.

“I have felt for a long time that we need improved cell coverage,” says Vice President for Student Affairs Art Costantino, as he sat in his office looking out at the tower and over Red Square.  “The students have come to expect coverage.”

Some of you may know that every year the Longhouse receives about $80,000 from the Ford Foundation to be portioned out into two seperate grants: The National Native Artist Master Initiative: Artist Teaching Artists and the National Native Creative Development Program.

Student concerns about the proposed revisions to the Student Conduct Code came to a head last week, when the Conduct Code disappearing task force (DTF) held open-campus forums and met with the Geoduck Student Union (GSU).

Tragedy continues to loom over the Evergreen campus after student Scott Havard took his own life shortly thereafter the death of Juliet Burkett. 36 year old Havard was found on October 12, 2011 at ten a.m. in his dorm room located in the Mods, by two members of RAD services: one staff member and one student. They had come to investigate a smoke alarm that had reportedly needed assistance. His room- mates had noticed Havard displaying depressive behavior the evening prior to the incident; however, they did not report anything suspicious.

On Oct. 14 and 15, Sustainable South Sound hosted Come to the Table: A Food Summit. This event was an opportunity for members from all parts of the community to come together and network with other people who are invested in their local food system.

Evergreen President Les Purce responded almost immediately when posters went up around campus with the words, “everyone hates a snitch,” accompanied by the prominent image of a spiked baseball bat. The email response, titled “Threats and Intimidating Behavior,” stated regarding the fliers, “The implication is clear: if you report criminal behavior, you will be harmed in violent ways.”
