Remembering Juliet Burkett

A black flag flew at the entrance to campus September 22, in memory of Evergreen student Juliet Burkett, who passed away September 18.

Burkett, 21, was traveling to Evergreen when she was killed in a car accident in South Dakota. She was accompanied by fellow Evergreen student Makayla Todd, 19, who was driving and sustained minor injuries. (For more information about the accident, please go here.)

Students from Burkett's 2010-11 program, Dance of Consciousness, planned a memorial for Sunday, September 25 to accommodate returning students. There may be another open ceremony for the Evergreen community next month.

Dance of Consciousness professors Don Middendorf, Ratna Roy, and Sarah Williams wrote that, "Juliet's enthusiasm and care for others pervaded everything she did in our program. She had a nurturing relationship with many of her peers and remembered everyone's birthday the first time she heard it, probably due to her compelling engagement with the world through her astrological interests. She worked hard yet quite playfully with her peers - especially in the performance groups and dream groups. Everyone enjoyed her smiling face as well as her frequent and hearty laughter."

We are gathering more information about Burkett and the ways students can commemorate her life; If you have any news or would like to post a remembrance, please contact the Cooper Point Journal.
