On Wednesday February 1st, acclaimed author and influential speaker Rebecca Walker gave two lectures on campus.
The remodeled HCC now has gender neutral restrooms. For those of you not in-the-know, this means that people of all genders can now freely choose whichever side of the bathroom they want to use. According to the December issue of RAD Times, “both bathrooms have stalls and the right bathroom has a urinal, but individuals may choose which bathroom they use without worrying about offending anyone in that room."
We are living in strange days indeed.
In this piece, I'd like to do a little bit of work connecting some of my past articles with the Cooper Point Journal to the present. I'm going to be brief. I am tired.
Last year, I attempted to cover the uprising in Egypt. One of my main focuses was on the effectiveness of social media in planning key acts of protest and civil disobedience. I noted how significant it was that one of Mubarek's first moves was an attempt to severely restrict internet access.
As the state legislature convenes to address the Washington budget shortfall, a good opportunity to voice our opinions and our concerns with our government presents itself. I adamantly believe that Washington should invest in our future by putting more money in education, not less. Investing in state schools is an important step in achieving economic recovery for our state.
I was in the CPJ three years ago when the campus burritos were still worth buying, when campus concerts were exciting, and when I thought Happyland was a myth. The group voted on its ultimate outcome: to officially move to a web-based, and then to a web-only publication.
On Tuesday the 15th the DEA, along with local law enforcement, raided over a dozen medical marijuana co-ops. It is unclear how many arrests were made, but at least one person is in custody and several employees were taken in for questioning. These raids occured on the heels of a series of similar actions in California, where DEA agents raided dispensaries and growers, confiscating their records and confiscating massive amounts of marijuana grown under the letter of state law.
On November 6th, the Evergreen Foundation hosted its annual Art of Living auction to raise money for the scholarships it provides. While the auction went on in the lobby of the library, activists from TESC Divest stood outside and tried to raise awareness of an important issue: the Foundation invests its money with the University of Washington system, which invests in companies that profit from Israel’s occupation of Palestine.
Why we should support credit unions over banks, and have the two ATMs in our CAB building switched for Bank Transfer Day
It is decided. This is officially the decade of "O." O as in the Occupy Movement; as in Obama is president; as in the Occupation of Iraq.
"What a strange announcement!" you say.
I love reality television. I’m going to go ahead and assume you don’t. In fact, I’m going to assume you don’t know a single person who does. I can deduce this because you’re reading, and literacy implies intellect, and intellect generally precludes people from enjoying reality television.
[Caution: trigger warning]
This morning I saw the most disturbing graffiti. Three of us stepped in to the boys’ bathroom of the Housing Community Center on campus and were shocked. We had been told not to clean until the words were documented. The walls read, “Kill Rapists” and “Dead men can’t rape.” I didn’t know what I was expecting, a mess, another common tag, who knows? What I saw scared me.
If you haven’t heard of Occupy Olympia or the OccupyWallstreet movement—you need to. Now. The proceeding words will be informative and colorfully pieced together, but they will not, I repeat - Not - adequately substitute your own personal investigation and participation of the movement. Go to Heritage Park, via the 41 or 48, and get out at the second stop over Rainbow Bridge. That sea of multi-colored tents, backed picturesquely by the Capitol, is Occupy Olympia. The movement is here, in your downtown.
With Occupy Wall street spreading its proactive message throughout the country, its cry for less big-business politics and a return to democratic legislature is slowly gaining coverage in media outlets less accustomed to reporting for and by the people. And with many cities, including our small rainy town of Olympia, soon to be taking part in this protest, I applaud the movement's ability to stay contemporary despite the lack of high-volume news coverage usually set aside for a Kardashian.
