No.20: Katie Garcin
Katie Garcin is a senior team captain who joined the Evergreen basketball team as a transfer student from Lower Columbia College in Longview, Washington. A Gooding, Idaho, native, Garcin has seen great success in as a basketball player. Evergreen has enjoyed her hard-nosed defensive prowess as well as her ability to shoot from outside.
What is your greatest athletic achievement?
In Garcin’s senior year of high school she led her team to its first top five finish in school history at the Idaho State Tournament. In the process, Garcin and company won the district title and knocked off the state's number one team.
What do you like the most about Evergreen?
The diversity and more so the faculty being understanding of students' schedules. Working with the faculty and just being able to collaborate with them.
What are your plans for after college?
“For sure grad school.” Garcin has already been accepted into Boise State University for sports medicine. Eventually, “I’d like to coach [high school].” Katie also added that Washington is a good fit and she would not mind coaching in the area in the future.
Did you have any athletes you admired growing up?
Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan. Garcin admires Tim Duncan for his emphasis on fundamentals.
No. 32: Alex Saab
Alex Saab is a sophomore guard from Lakes High School of Lakewood, Wash. Most recently, Alex was responsible for sinking the game-winning 3-pointer that sunk the Northwest Christian University Beacons in the CRC two weeks ago.
What is your greatest athletic achievement?
“Probably coming from shooting [guard] to point guard.” Saab explained that she takes pride in learning how to be a leader and it also shows that “she [coach Heuer] expects a lot out of me.”
What do you like the most about Evergreen?
“The freedom and individuality of the school.” Saab is in the process of studying social work.
What are your plans for after college?
Saab is pursuing a focus on social work and would like to move to New York or Florida where she has family.
Did you have any athletes you admired growing up?
Cynthia Cooper and Allen Iverson. Saab admires the scrappiness and hustle of both players and especially admires Iverson’s style.
No. 23: Latrina Woods
A junior guard from Skyway, Wash., Latrina transferred to Evergreen from LaSierra University in Riverside, Calif. In one season, Woods has managed to receive Cascade Collegiate Conference Player of the Week honors and put her name atop some of the best in the conference.
What is your greatest athletic achievement?
At Renton High School, Woods scored 47 points against Lakes High School in the first round of the playoffs. Woods’ Renton team was the underdog in the game.
What do you like the most about Evergreen?
“Academics and laid-back atmosphere.” Woods also mentioned she values her team and teammates and enjoys the sports facilities that Evergreen offers.
What are your plans for after college?
Woods would like to get into physical therapy and ultimately own her own sports medicine facility.
Did you have any athletes you admired growing up?
Kobe Bryant, for his ability to take over a game and his confidence.
No. 15: Angel Stewart
A junior guard from Yakima, Wash., Stewart brings a tempo and energy to the game that is unmatched. She has recently been voted onto the Cascade Collegiate Conference All-Academic Team for the second year in a row. The award is given to players who show exemplary academic and athletic standing at their respected schools.
What has been your greatest athletic achievement?
In addition to her two CCC All-Academic teams, Stewart is most proud of her status of starter on the Geoduck basketball team. Being a starter has shown Angel that she has figured out the system and that she is fitting in well.
What do you like the most about Evergreen?
Stewart likes the learning environment, and likes bringing diversity to the school.
What are your plans for after college?
Stewart would like to work with minority youth as a mentor.
Did you have any athletes you admired growing up?
Allen Iverson and Cynthia Cooper. Angel admires Cooper and Iverson’s work ethic on and off the basketball court.
No.22: Ali Matisons
A transfer from Centralia College, Matisons has seen significant playing time and brings intensity to a loaded forward position on the Lady Geoduck squad. One of only two seniors on the team, Matisons also brings her leadership qualities to a blossoming Evergreen team.
What is your greatest athletic achievement?
At Aberdeen High School, Matisons hit the game-winning half court shot against rival Elma High School on Elma’s home court.
What do you like most about Evergreen?
“Evals rather than grades.”
What are your plans for after college?
Matisons would like to help coach Centralia College with her old coach and eventually get her masters in social work.
Did you have any athletes you admired growing up?
“My dad [Ivars Matisons].” He played for Wishkah Valley High School. Ali admires that he never gave up and the fact that he taught himself how to shoot with both hands as a result of injury.
