Friday night
The Geoduck women’s basketball team showed how dangerous a team they can be by plucking the Oregon Institute of Technology Owls 65-56 in Klamath Falls, Ore., last Friday night. The Geoducks, who are very much alive in the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament hunt, claimed their fifth conference win of the season in the always hostile Danny Miles Gym.
Chelsey Nill had a career night, dropping 19 points on the Owls and pulling down three rebounds. Her 19 points were a career high for her as a Geoduck, and led all scorers on the night. Latrina Woods had a quiet night, scoring 11 points and grabbing five rebounds. In an all-around team effort, five Geoducks scored 10 points or more.
Saturday night
Evergreen State traveled to Ashland, Ore., Saturday night to take on the Southern Oregon University Raiders. The Geoducks upset the Raiders in a 70-61 overtime victory in their last meeting at the Greenhouse when Katie Garcin and company held the SOU superstar Jacki Speer to just six points and four rebounds. Jacki Speer, the CCC player of the week, would get her revenge, dropping 24 points and pulling down an impressive 15 rebounds in an 86-64 rout at home.
Evergreen had trouble keeping the Raiders off the boards, getting out-rebounded 46-27. Latrina Woods shot 6-11 on the night en route to scoring 15 points. Junior Tana Palmason added seven points and six rebounds while junior guard Angel Stewart accumulated eight points and two steals.
The Geoducks (9-16 overall, 5-9 CCC) currently sit in a tie in the eighth-place spot in the CCC. The top eight teams in the conference qualify for the CCC tournament at the end of February.
This weekend
The Evergreen women’s team hosts Warner Pacific College and Concordia University at the Greenhouse Friday and Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. WPC is tied for third in the CCC and would be a big upset should the Geoducks win on Friday night. Saturday night is “Senior Night” for the Geoducks as they say goodbye to their seniors Katie Garcin and Ali Matisons, who will play their last home games as Geoducks.
