Dr. Margaret Madden, the first of four candidates to be Evergreen’s next president, will visit the college on Wednesday, Jan. 28 to speak and meet students.

Madden will give a speech and answer questions in Evergreen’s Recital Hall, in the COM building at noon, followed by a student focused meeting at 3 p.m.

She has been the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at State University of New York at Potsdam since 2002, where she is also a professor of psychology. She holds a doctorate in psychology from University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and her work focuses on feminism, gender and higher education.

On Thursday, Jan. 29 she will visit the Tacoma campus for a public forum in the Lyceum Hall at 10:00 a.m.

Madden will be the first of four candidates for president to visit Evergreen’s campuses over the next few weeks (official schedule and candidate bios here). Dr. Luis Pedraja will be on here on Monday, Feb. 2, followed by Dr. Rhona Free on Wednesday, Feb. 4. The fourth finalist Dr. George Bridges’ visit has yet to be announced.

The taskforce in charge of hiring the new president hopes to make a decision and job offer in March. The college is spending around $70,000 on the president search by hiring a private consulting firm, according to John Carmichael, deputy to the president and secretary to the board of trustees. They held a public forum in October to get student input on the process before closing public comment in December.

Madden is also a candidate to be president of Eastern Illinois University, Montana State University, and SUNY Buffalo State.
